Alice Stokes Edwards Scholarship

The Alice Stokes Edwards Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996 through gifts from Mrs. Edwards’ son, Charles Clifton Edwards, Jr. Mrs. Edwards came to High Point from Poughkeepsie, NY as a young bride in 1909. Mrs. Edwards’ husband, Charles Sr., was a prominent High Point businessman and founder of Edwards Business College, which opened in 1910. Mrs. Edwards devoted much of her time to Edwards Business College endeavors although she was never officially an employee. Mr. Charles Edwards, Jr., was quoted as saying he vividly remembers his mother’s sense of duty and faithfulness to her husband’s college as she worked to find job opportunities for the College’s students. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the University’s Office of Financial Planning. Recipients must demonstrate a sound record of academic achievement at the high school, college, and/or university level. Preference will be given to female students residing in the State of North Carolina who are majoring in business or related field of study. In the selection process, if all factors appear to be equal between two students, preference will be given to one who has a demonstrated financial need. Scholarships will be automatically renewable upon successful completion of the previous year’s work.
