Ann Swanson and Robert K. Latta Endowed Scholarship

Ann Swanson Latta was born in Mount Airy on June 2, 1934. Her parents were Mary Taylor Swanson and Claude Addison Swanson. Ann was a gifted athlete, excelling in basketball at Mount Airy High School, where she was known by the nickname of “Timber.” She attended High Point College, where she was a member of the May Court, and Theta Phi Sorority. While at High Point College, she met and married Robert Kenneth Latta of High Point, who preceded her in death in 1999. Ann after college Ann was employed as the first secretary and bookkeeper at Emerywood Baptist Church. Her hobbies included: painting, interior decorating, golf, and a life-long love of gardening and bird-watching.he dedicated many hours to numerous charities and she was a member of the High Point Junior League. he was the beloved mother of four daughters: Beth Craft, son-in-law Major Mark Craft of Maggie Valley; Lou Earnhardt, son-in-law Don Earnhardt of High Point; Robin Smith of Mt. Ida, Arkansas; and Swanson McElveen of Tampa, Florida. Also surviving are grandchildren: Joy Balla, Marett Mattox and fiancé Tom Henninger, Taylor Spector and husband Toby Spector, Mack Earnhardt, Sheridan Earnhardt, Robert Smith, Claire Smith, great-granddaughter Elouise Spector, beloved niece Vikki Hall and husband Mike Hall, nephews Randy Samuels and wife Liz, Gary Samuels and wife Karen, Larry Samuels, wife Vicki, Tom Carson and Claude Carson. Ann Swanson Latta passed away Thursday, March 3, 2017, at her home in High Point at the age of 82.
The Ann Swanson Latta and Robert K. Latta endowed scholarship was established at High Point College (now High Point University) in 1974 in memory of Claude A. Swanson, the father of Ann Swanson Latta, by Mr. and Mrs. Latta and renamed in honor of Ann and Robert Latta in 2011. Recipients will be selected by the Office of Financial Planning. Preference will be given to students residing in Surry County, North Carolina.
