Bertha Connelly Maw '33 Endowed Scholarship

The Bertha Connelly Maw ‘33 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2011 through a bequest from the estate of her husband, Mr. Alvin Maw. Both Mr. and Mrs. Maw came from very humble backgrounds and wished to provide support as a way to give others a head start on their college education. Mrs. Maw retired from the Pickens County Library in Easley, SC. She also worked for the State Department of Education as a secretary in the Trade and Industrial School. A life-long member of Fairview (SC) Methodist Church, Mrs. Maw joined the church in 1925 and was an organizer and member of the T. M. Johnson Sunday school class. She was awarded the Methodist Service Pin. She was also active in the Woman’s Society of Christian Service and served in the Conference as well as on the local level. Active in many community and civic affairs, Mrs. Maw was a member of the SC State Archives Association, Old Pendleton Chapter of the DAR, and a former member of the Women’s Club of Easley. Mrs. Maw was an accomplished genealogist and historian and was awarded a DAR medal from the William Easley Chapter of the DAR. Also, Mrs. Maw was one of the last surviving charter members of Easley Order of the Eastern Star, serving as a worthy matron and grand representative. The purpose of the Bertha Connelly Maw ‘33 Scholarship is to provide support to students with high financial need. Recipients are selected by the Office of Financial Planning. Scholarships can be renewable upon successful completion of the previous year’s academic work.
