Betty M. Welch Scholarship

The Betty Marie Welch Scholarship was established in 2001 through gifts from Mrs. Welch’s estate. A lifelong resident of High Point, she was a member of the High Point College Class of 1941. In High Point she was greatly respected as a teacher. She began her career in Thomasville and later served as a teacher at Central and Andrews High School in High Point. Toward the end of her career she was co-principal at Ferndale Elementary and then was named co-principal at Andrews High School where she served until her retirement in 1981. Mrs. Welch was a member of First Presbyterian Church in High Point. Mrs. Welch’s lifelong motto was patience, fortitude and self-control. This discipline was reflected by her students, who expressed about Mrs. Welch, “she demands much of every student and gets it.” Recipients of the Welch Scholarship will be students who are engaged in the study of Mathematics at High Point University. Preference will be given to students with financial need.
