Canterbury Club Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Canterbury Club Memorial Scholarship was established in March 2010 with gifts from the Estate of Dr. Helen A. Horn. When she was ten years old, her father died, leaving the family to experience financial struggles. Her grandmother’s gift of $2,000 for her education was the inspiration for this endowment gift and investment in young people. Dr. Horn, originally from Maryland, received her undergraduate degree from Goucher College and her medical degree from the University of Maryland. She was a pioneer, as very few women attended college in the 1940’s and even fewer women attended medical school. She moved to the High Point, North Carolina area when she accepted a position at the then High Point Memorial Hospital as the first female pathologist in the hospital’s history. Dr. Horn was remembered by her friends as a private, humble woman with a love for reading, travel, music and her sense of humor. She was an active volunteer in the Jamestown community. Preference will be given to students from the High Point/Jamestown area who demonstrate high financial need. Scholarships may be renewable based upon successful completion of the previous year’s studies.
