Chester C. Smith and Jane Smith Merritt Endowed Scholarship
The Chester C. Smith and Jane Smith Merritt Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996 through contributions from Carl and Anzelette Smith in honor of Carl Smith’s brother, Chester, and by Chester Smith’s daughter, Mrs. Jane Smith Merritt. Chester Smith is a long-standing friend and alumnus of High Point University. He was present in High Point on the day of ground breaking exercises for the College’s first building, Roberts Hall. When he attended High Point College, he was president of the Class of 1931 and received the “Best All-Around Male Student” in the senior class award as voted by the faculty. After graduation, Mr. Smith began a 42-year career with the Young Men’s Christian Association and served associations in High Point and Kannapolis, NC; Miami, FL; Atlanta, GA; and Danville and Richmond, VA. In 1974. Chet and his wife Ruth retired to Florida. The University community lost Mr. Chester Smith in December 2014 at the age of 105. Recipients of the Smith Scholarship are selected by the Office of Financial Planning. Preference will be given to incoming freshmen or upperclassmen in sound standing who are experiencing financial need. Scholarships may be renewable upon successful completion of the previous year’s work.
