J. Allen Thacker Scholarship

The J. Allen Thacker Endowed Scholarship was established in 1993 through gifts from an anonymous donor, friends and family members of Dr. Thacker, Class of 1939. A former faculty member of HPU, he served in a number of positions, including as former chair of the Department of Education in 1969. A Guilford County native, Dr. Thacker received degrees from High Point College, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina. He held teaching positions at a secondary and college level through his fifty year professional career. A devoted Churchman and family man, Dr. Thacker attended Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and was married to his devoted wife, Betty, for 45 years. Recipients of the Thacker Scholarship will be selected by the Office of Financial Planning from recommendations made by the Dean of the School of Education. The scholarship will be used to assist students majoring in education and may be awarded to incoming freshmen or to upperclassmen. Preference will be given to students from North Carolina, but other applicants may be considered on an as-needed basis. Scholarships may be renewable upon successful completion of the previous year’s work.
