J. Clyde Hooker Endowed Scholarship
The J. Clyde Hooker, Jr. Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996 through contributions from Sales Representatives, employees and friends of Mr. Hooker. The scholarship was created in celebration of Mr. Hooker’s 50-year anniversary with Hooker Furniture. At the time the scholarship was established, Mr. Hooker was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hooker Furniture Company of Martinsville, VA. Mr. Hooker had a distinguished career in the furniture industry serving as past president of the Southern Manufacturers Association and past chairman of the advisor board for both the Southern Furniture Market Center and the Dallas Market Center. He also served as a director for Patrick Henry Community College and as a trustee for Virginia Military Institute Foundation. The Hooker Scholarship will be awarded to students from North Carolina and Virginia who are majoring in Home Furnishings and are entering their junior or senior year of study. Recipients should be of sound character, leaders in the academic community and community-at-large, and preparing for a career in the furniture industry. Students should be expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. Preference will be given to students who are versatile and possess the potential for service to the furniture industry. Scholarships are renewable upon successful completion of the previous year’s work. An internship opportunity may be available with the Hooker Furniture Corporation and the recipient should agree to participate in an interview with Hooker representatives prior to the summer of their senior year regarding internship opportunities. All candidates for consideration must have the recommendation of the head of the University’s Home Furnishings program.
