Kate Smart and Robert McKinley Phillips Endowed Scholarship
The Eva Kate Smart and Robert McKinley Phillips Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006. Kate and Don Phillips were loving and devoted husband and wife, parents and grandparents who were active in their church and community. They were natives of North Carolina, living most of their lives in Roxboro, where they worked in several cotton mills. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips desired that their children and grandchildren pursue higher education, an opportunity not available to them. Thanks to their tireless work, sacrifice and determination, their son graduated from High Point College and thus began a family legacy of High Point College graduates (classes of 1964, 1988 and 1991). Though not rich in material possessions, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were wealthy beyond means in their Christian witness and generous spirits. Therefore, this scholarship is established to the glory of God and in loving memory of Eva Kate Smart Phillips and Robert McKinley “Don” Phillips by their son, James Donald Phillips and daughter-in-law, Bettie Spencer Jones Phillips. Recipients of the Phillips Endowed Scholarship are selected by the Office of Financial Planning. First priority will be given to residents of North Carolina who are active members of their local church and who are contributing through their own efforts to their college education. Preference will be given to a student who is average academically and who might not otherwise quality for scholarships that are based on academics or financial need. It is not to be restricted to a certain major.
