Nellie Spencer and Levin Kirkman Jones, Sr. Endowed Scholarship
Nellie Spencer and Levin Kirkman Jones, Sr. were loving and devoted husband and wife, parents, and grandparents who were active in their church and community. They were natives of North Carolina, living most of their lives in Kinston, where they owned and operated a small gift shop. Mr. and Mrs. Jones desired that their children and grandchildren pursue higher education. Thanks to their tireless work, sacrifice and determination both of their children graduated from High Point College, which began a family legacy of High Point College graduates (classes of 1964, 1967, 1988 and 1991). Though not rich in material possessions, Mr. and Mrs. Jones were wealthy beyond measure in their Christian witness and generous spirits. Therefore, this scholarship is established to the glory of God and in loving memory of Nellie Spener and Levin Kirkman Jones, Sr. by their daughter, Mrs. Bettie Spencer Jones Phillips, and son-in-law, James Donald Phillips. Recipients of the Jones Scholarship will be selected by the Office of Financial Planning. First priority will be given to residents of North Carolina who are active members of their local church and who are contributing through their own efforts to their college education. Preference will be given to a student who is average academically and who might not otherwise quality for scholarships that are based on academics or financial need. It is not to be restricted to a certain major field of study.
