Sylvia S. Nicks Endowed Scholarship
Sylvia Stella Nicks grew up in Roxboro, North Carolina, with the belief in serving God by helping others. Her grandfather was a Methodist minister, influencing her to attend the Methodist-based High Point College in High Point, North Carolina. She graduated with the Class of 1960 with a B.A. in Religion and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Throughout her career she worked in the helping profession, in churches and in teaching received a Master’s Degree in Counseling. Ms. Nicks retired as a social worked with the North Carolina Division of Services of the Blind and lives in Asheville, North Carolina where she is a member of Grace United Methodist Church serving the community, shut-ins and outreach to people in need. Ms. Nicks established the Sylvia S. Nicks Endowed Scholarship at High Point University in July 2017. Her desire is to help young people and promote to them the value of education in their lives. Recipients will be selected from North Carolina on the basis of financial need as determined by the High Point University Office of Financial Planning. This scholarship may be renewed upon the successful completion of the previous year’s work. This scholarship will be funded with the remainder of Mrs. Nicks’ Merrill Lynch IRA as included in her estate.
