Nita P. and R. Gilmer Wagoner Academic Endowed Scholarship
The Nita P. and R. Gilmer Wagoner Academic Endowed Scholarship was established in October 2019 in memory of the Wagoners by the NitaP. Wagoner Trust. The Reverend R. Gilmer Wagoner was a member of the High Point University Class of 1939, and was a United Methodist minister who served in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church for many years. Mrs. Wagoner was a school teacher and school librarian in various locations where her husband served churches. The Wagoners retired to Taylorsville, NC. The Reverend and Mrs. Wagoner wished to perpetuate the benefits of a High Point University education, most especially preparation for the critically impo1iant fields_of medicine, the ministry, and public school teaching. Likewise, R. Gilmer Wagoner played baseball while in College, treasured the experience, and understood how valuable the student athlete experience is for many University students, past, present, and future. Accordingly, the Nita P. Wagoner Trust provided for two separate scholarships at High Point University, a scholarship for students playing baseball, and a scholarship for students enrolled in pre-medicine, pre-ministry, or leading to certification as a public school teacher. The Nita P. and R. Gilmer Wagoner Academic Endowed Scholarship will be given to a recipient selected on the basis of financial need from eligible undergraduate students as determined by the High Point University Office of Financial Planning. First preference will be given to a student majoring in pre-medicine, pre-ministry, or for certification as a public school teacher. This Scholarship may be renewable upon the successful completion of the previous year’s academic work.
